It's clear that vanilla game types need more complexity to differentiate strategies and ways to play ... Now it's always move pickup aim shoot
no, teeworlds gameplay we have right now was never pushed up to the ceiling, we need more players, high-tier players, to see what it actually looks like when people understand all the flows both of the game and teamplay. i guess we had that back in the days but this period wasn't long enough to make a base for new school players. and latter one, game doesn't become boring itself, but monotonous against the same people we have in the game, since we don't have much players to compete with. the game itself is pretty addictive, if player was intersted with vanilla once they will be interested forever. the real problem is lack of people on all levels of tw food chain, especially high-tier. look, ddnet and kog got popular because of amazing tricks and moments done by high-tier ddrace/gores players, content makers did a huge load into the shrine to make these mods more popular. and it made a circle for one, two and unbelievable amount further times. cycle by cycle one content makers did swap old ones and it's still progressing. more people plays -> more interesting moments to show off -> more viewers -> more players that generate content -> go back step 1. that will not last forever, but it indeed did a lot to the current playerbase size (edited)
