I would do a web version remake with only basic functionality of teeworlds... It can be much faster than dealing with the current codebase.

In my opinion the winning evolution to get more players is to simplify the inputs to make it playable on mobile devices with a touchscreen... Can't be the same game as teeworlds is now

people are trying to make DDNet playable on mobile

ddnet is already fully playable on android but I don’t think anyone will look into iOS in the near future
