I didn't played ddrace at that time and not sure with the maps but as it seems skynet used to be a bunch of maps that had been merged into one?
@Stiopa to your question how tw got players in the first years from my point of view it was mainly due it's solid exposure in a german tv show called Giga Liga Live where it was frequently played on live TV that's how I found the game and many others back then, also since Giga was a german TV channel most people back then were in fact from Germany .. the gaming channel Giga unfortunately was shut down by its owning network Sky and never to be seen again player count for tw kept constant after awhile, people stuck around but as time passed it slowly dropped of.
I learned about it from a website about free lan party games while researching activities to do while the teacher was trying to teach us word/excel/etc.
