My quick tip list for the classic 3 tile save:

Most important part is getting comfortable with hooking at a pretty steep angle to one side (left/right) compared to the standard hooking "straight up". And being able to maintan a position for a bit (Staying still mid-air)
After that you have to position above them and slightly behind them based on the direction you want to save towards (If you want to hammer to right, be slightly above and to the left and vice versa)
Toss them up just below your level (Practise makes perfect on how long to hold depending on location and distance)
Hammer straight to the side or slightly down (That's the standard)
Practise makes perfect. You just have to do it over and over and eventually you'll get comfortable with it and you'll do it 90% of the time without failing. At that point you can throw in variants, save in a particular direction, harder areas etc.
