for instance if u wanna climb up u typically move towards the opposite direction of the wall (e.g. hook right tap a)
if u wanna go lower during your hook (swing) you move towards the hook
for tight parts where u wanna maintain height you can just do hooks with the right rhythm/angle + tap a if you go right for instance, if you're going too low
