apparently we have an assert that triggers if we loaded more than we expected

Warnings are not as useful, almost nobody reports warning to us. The proper fix is to ensure the loading amount is set and incremented correctly. Though if that is more complicated then patching out the assert for the release would be fine.

Sure, but I kinda dislike that we increment it by hand. I think this is a good case for a RAII pattern. If a loading comp is contructed it adds 1 to the total loading. when it's dropped it adds 1 to the counter

Hm, that's not a bad idea. Though it does make me wonder if the total can be figured out at compile time instead

Did you add more menu images to the menuimages folder in your config directory or the data folder? I only see this happening when adding more (unused) files in the menuimages folder.
