A client on the very basic level is just a program that exchanges network packets with a server. The only thing the server sees of the client are the packets that it receives, and that's the only thing the server can use to distinguish a legitimate client from one with cheats

So if a cheat client sends packets that are just like those from a legitimate client then there is no way to tell. And it's very easy to mimic the official client because it's open source
