zooming out very far (far beyond the point of being able to see anything) makes a VERY LOUD static noise for whatever reason
07:54
id maybe add a forced limit in case anyone else fucks around and finds out kek
07:54
cause theres never any reason to actually zoom out that far but it blasted my ears for doing so
Avatar
i thought I was going insane when hearing something similar to a high pitched coil whine that changes pitch when zooming in and out

I think there is a limit (cl_limit_max_zoom_level), is the noise coming from your speaker or from your GPU?
Avatar
headset so yea speaker
08:24
i was screensharing so the others watching heard it too

yea but u can disable it, i mean a forced one to prevent weird things like that happening
08:25
cause surely im not the only one dumb enough to test such things
08:25
it also didnt let me zoom in, i had to rejoin to reset my zoom
Avatar
Your own fault, we don't advertise this setting anywhere, some people have good GPUs and can zoom out way further without problems, so hard to set a fixed limit. also depends on the map

oh i know its my fault, the only reason i suggested adding a limit is because i dont think there is ever any need to zoom out that far xd
10:08
no map will ever be big enough to require that zoom

laughs in back in time 3 kek i fully zoom out to quickly navigate a map when i dont want to lock my view onto a specific person - a "limit" would be annoying because if the limit is set to harsh people have to manually change it

u underestimate how far i have zoomed out kek
12:25
yes, somewhere in here is a bit3
12:29
again, the only reason someone else would encounter this bug would just be from curiosity, so its not like this is much of an issue but the sound is loud enough for me to suggest adding a (still very high) limit to show some mercy to anyone else dumb enough to try it lol
12:31
but i dont personally care if that ever gets added or not, was just a thought
Avatar
f3 my right ear will never be the same
Avatar
imma try this just bcs u sugest its so bad to do that it needs to be imposeble

A more fun idea: fix the audio bug causing this
15:20
Though if that isn't hard to do then it's not that fun
15:21
I just want someone to spend a week on a bug that nobody cares about
justatest 1
15:22
Make a blog post about it and suddenly it's no longer pointless ;)

There's definitely something weird about zooming out very far, at some point the scoreboard is forced to be shown. What map does the audio bug happen on and which sounds are potentially playing?

i dont remember the map, i believe it was on kog. and as for the sound, just very loud pure static
15:29
so im not sure what actual sound could be playing
Avatar
Are you using the default sampling rate setting?
Avatar
where can i check that?
15:31
most likely
Avatar
snd_rate in F1, the default should be 48000
Avatar
yea its default
Avatar
ok, would be good to know when it happens next time if the map contains map sounds or if it's caused by non-map sounds

i always have map sound off, if that matters
Avatar
yeah, that's good to know, then I guess it can't be caused by map sounds, if you completely disabled them

ah it was impton, on kog servers
15:37
lemme see if i can recreate it there ig
Avatar
Sound also breaks for me after zooming out very far, but it only becomes silent
Avatar
hmm, i cant get it to happen again xd
15:56
maybe its more specific than i thought cause i tried replicating everything that i did when it happened and some other things but its normal now

I'd bet it has something to do with having audio being played on your computer, somehow. Try with a video playing or something, cause we were voice chatting during it. Or I guess maybe due to streaming it?
16:09
Though you did have a problem with your mic immediately after it happened as well, maybe something related to that caused it
Avatar
why i didnt get cl_smooth_expo on 18.7
Avatar
Because it doesn't need an option. It was only present in the video on https://github.com/ddnet/ddnet/pull/9124 for testing I assume
I don't like linear interpolation, I think it always looks bad. Comparison: (Sorry for the crunchy bitrate, github is limiting to 10mb now) Base.Profile.2024.10.06.-.22.3...

I had a yt stream open, tried doing it on the exact demo where it originally happened, and tried screen sharing it as well. Also the mic issue im pretty sure was just cause it wasn't plugged in fully after I plugged it back in

There is no confirmation when trying to restart the client (after downloading the new update) while having an unsaved map in the editor. But there is one when trying to leave the client with an unsaved map. A user could expect the client to keep the map after the restart in my opinion. So it could be nice to add a confirmation window to ensure it is not the case
Avatar
that sounds like a rough edge case - hmm
