As for the mechanism, I'm not familiar enough with the syscalls involved, but I think there's one that asks the kernel to return when there's something to read

I think desktop icons are pointless and it looks better without same with the performance monitors that you will never see because you'll have a window covering them (if you really need them put them in the taskbar)
