I would think the game fails to load if you actually delete anything

Starting without data folder works, but somehow it reverts to OpenGL 1.5.0. Text is completely invisible if the fonts could not be loaded.

Have you tried different renderers? It looks almost as if the texture got overwritten by all 1s
