I'm actually not quite sure how the preview is done. It seems to depend on a library completely unknown to me. (https://github.com/heinrich5991/libtw2/tree/master/render-map)

nice about that preview is that it is done completely on the cpu. @heinrich5991 is the author of that library :) you could try out my twgpu-map-photography. the upside would be that it also draws the quads and other details such as envelopes. the downside is that it might take more time to set up, as the server needs some sort of graphics backend
