can someone explain to me what it is with the ger 10 whitelist servers? what makes them special?

It makes them less prone to ddos attacks afaik

its a verification method that prevents non verified ip addresses to bombard the server with requests - making it (as Devinci said) less prone to ddos attacks - you can think of it like a CAPTCHA you need to solve before beeing able to entering a website.
