remember to install the correct mirrors, format the disk properly, select network and audio drivers, select a WM so you dont spend another 30 minutes on setting it up etc
Everything is already formatted
07:38
The efi partion and the root partition
07:38
Because of pop os
07:41
I just need to delete pop os
07:41
And that's it i guess
07:42
I am installing arch in a vm for now
Avatar
What system is holding vm?
07:43
Is it gentoo? Maybe proxmox
Avatar
wdym holding vm
Avatar
What OS is the vm running on
Avatar
Pilon is running Pop OS atm afaik
08:06
Manjaro
Avatar
Since i want to nuke pop os
Avatar
Manjaro is pretty good imo
08:07
It works
08:07
Mostly
Avatar
Every distro can be good enough really
Avatar
Sometimes manjaro decides to lock me out of the system
Avatar
Except for gentoo
08:07
(because i dont understand it, so its Bad)

My password literally doesn't work sometimes

it's very easy

it's 1 partition and 2 commands

virtual box

You give it what it wants and load in the .ISO File - you Open it and use the archinstall Script
08:45
Thats it

08:45
qemu the god of all emulators
08:45
thanks to kvm kernel module which makes virtualization trivial
08:46
u can still use vbox or vmware if u hate urself and hate ur commputer

+++++++
08:46
Qemu with GPU passthrough on top

ya well u need a spare gpu for that

No

Single GPU Passthrough exists
Avatar
or you can disable your graphics driver module and blacklist the device
Avatar
btw i installed grub but it doesn show any boot options
Avatar
and then give the vm device access w iommu
08:49
but it's hard for 1 gpu
Avatar

btw i installed grub but it doesn show any boot options
probably because i forgot to actually configure it or something
08:49
lol
08:50
and reading the arch wiki is too much work for me
Avatar
The only Problem is that you can simutaniously only either use Main or vm with single GPU passthrough, the Setup itself is quite easy If you ask me

what can i even to from this grub command line

10:54
Why is the quadratic formula so weird
10:54
I am trying to understand this equation doesn't really feel like it should work (edited)
10:55
What does ∆ even represent
10:55
Why is it b² - 4ac
10:55
How would you even get to this formula
Avatar
It represents the Change or difference
Avatar
Sure, i guess
10:56
(b²) - (4ac)
10:56
Difference
Avatar
, if we have two quantities t1 and t0, the difference between them would be represented as ∆t = t1 - t0
Avatar
But why does it work xd
Avatar
Why shouldnt it
Avatar
Because it's random
10:57
You calculate some random stuff
10:57
And it's somehow the solution (edited)
Avatar
The difference between to caluclations cant be random, one of the two caluclations itself can
Avatar

just look at some video/paper with the demonstration in it. iirc it's quite short

is it rude if i go full arch user? - did you use archinstall or did you configure it yourself
Avatar
ofc myself
15:58
thats why i recommended the archinstall script, it automatically installs network drivers
Avatar
it worked in the live enviroment
16:00
because it is preconfigured in the live enviroment
16:00
but not in actual install
Avatar
Avatar

if you're using LAN and its not working, your network manager is broken (98/100 times its a faulty installation), if its wifi and its not working, there could be multiple reasons (edited)

its a vm
16:07
so

there is no such thing as wifi in a vm i think

but the inputs go to the vm
16:12
i guess

use snipping tool

btw

try removing it, even tho i dont know if the command works then, because u is supposed to specify the log of the service i want to see
16:16
try journalctl -rb dhcpcd
16:17
lol

honestly maybe i should just use manjaro
16:18
if it works
16:18
lol
Avatar
stop distro hopping and stick to a simple one
Avatar
True, fuck that fancy shmancy shit
Avatar
considering you seem to be new to this stuff, seriously consider just sticking to ubuntu
16:19
you can have ubuntu look the same way manjaro does within a couple of clicks

neither is windows lol

windows does what you want out of the box
16:25
thats what windows is made for
16:26
linux is for tinkering, exploring, changes, and the configuration all the way down to your kernel
Avatar
what i mean by "setting up" is installing software
16:26
and logging in all the accounts
16:26
and stuff
Avatar
Write a script
Avatar
its just easier to boot into manjaro xd

create .dotfiles
16:27
or a script, as milkeey said

.dotfiles?

.files

hidden files?
16:28
i know about those

you seemed confused about them, thats why i sent the link

can i just copy my /home

anyways, one issue i found on pop os is that packages are outdated
16:33
at least inkscape
Avatar
thats not a pop os issue, thats the package manager's issue
16:34
so basically it was 2 years old i think
Avatar
if you care about the newest stuff of them all, use Nix/AUR i guess
16:35
these are the most updated and well maintained package manager's out there
Avatar
i'd love to install arch
16:36
but it just requires a bit of time
16:37
to understand
Avatar
Avatar
pilonpl
i'd love to install arch
to use AUR, you dont need Arch
Avatar
i did use AUR
16:37
on manjaro
16:37
to install roblox
16:38
and it broke
16:38
so i used flatpak instead (edited)
Avatar
so when wine
Avatar
when wine
16:41
what
16:42
roblox doesnt work with wine
16:43
actually running games on linux is really easy
16:43
i wasnt expecting that
16:43
when i first installed linux
16:44
pretty much everything just works
16:44
at least the games i play
16:44
like ddnet
16:44
which has a native version
16:44
so
16:44
yeah
16:45
but subnautica works
16:45
through proton
Avatar
Open Source Software for running Windows applications on other operating systems.
16:46

16:46
with a workaround using vinegar as bootstrapper
16:48
i guess i can just install manjaro on my better ssd since it works so well lol
16:48
for me at least
16:50
arch would be great tho
16:50
i have to learn how to use it properly
17:02
its bad for ssds to be full
17:02
from what i've heard
17:03
but if i have 2 partitions
17:03
does it matter how full one of the partitions is?
17:04
i guess ssds balance writes
17:04
but how does that work
Avatar
Ever wondered how SSDs read and write data, or what determines their performance? Our tech explainer has you covered.
Avatar
so i guess partitions dont matter
17:21
it seems like for an ssd data is data

proton is valve wine for steam
18:22
Sure
18:22
Valve cares about linux
18:22
Because steam deck i guess
Avatar
because they dont want to depend on microsoft
18:25
because windows is owned by a company
18:25
that also makes games
18:25
is in the game market
18:25
it makes so much sense to target linux
18:25
any smart company would do it
18:25
instead of depending on a OS made by a corpo they dont control

not really for most people considering the vast majority of people run windows
23:40
maybe it makes more sense to target linux if you also make hardware that runs linux
