I wonder if there is even a deeper reason for that mistake. I obv don't know chinese but in japanese 漆 is used for 7 in a formal context and those usually come from chinese directly. Could it be that the person knew it had water and a 7 somewhere but did not remember the character?

he definitely did not remember how to write 漆 that's why I think he wrote a simpler version

that's what I found facinating at least. since our generation are so used to pinyin we would just write that if we forgot a character

and I think technically when they were used as number 7, the author back then were just making mistakes, cuz there are a lot of cases where a character is used where it does not make any sense, and researchers have to map them to another character that was in use at the time with the "intended" meaning (which probably means researchers guessed it) (edited)
