the categories themselves go off of stars for difficulty, with 1 being the easiest and 5 being the hardest of that category
you can go to an empty server, press esc and go to call votes, you can pick your category that you want to try out, then go back and hit Random unfinished map and set the reason to 1 to get a random 1* map, the easiest difficulty of that category

but to be fair. if it hits the taste of the player base is hard to tell.. more story doesn't make it a better game automatically.
