As small as possible, as large as necessary. I think there is no fixed size limit, try to aim for 1 MB, but 5 MB is definitely too large except if your map is something incredible. Most likely you embedded large images or made the layers way too large. If you upload the map file someone can help you

I don't think he created map in over 1mil blocks x and y . Even if he did it wouldn't take that many space .
