it appears preferred language is used on any link on wiki

so if you have english as preferred, all pages will appear english too

Oh, that seems unintuitive to me. When on the real wikipedia I can read in language X and click on links without ever being redirected to my "preferred" language, which might not have the same article quality

this is because wikipedia runs an independent wiki for each language
