does updating the client automatically rename /teeworlds to /ddnet ? Or does it only happen from fresh installs where /teeworlds doesn't already exist? I renamed mine manually, but I've been curious if it's only people on old clients who still have /teeworlds

Only fresh installs

old ones will stay at Teeworlds indefinitely because the upgrade path is messy
