Since we're doing a push to assist newer players, I think it would be a good idea to differentiate the different types of lasers, so that non-moving laser entities aren't confused with door...

Do it. I had it taped to the ceiling for a while until I got bored of it and just pulled it through the duct for the phone cable

Didn't need a landline in my room, so I tied the ethernet cable to the end of the phone cable, applied a generous amount of dish soap and pulled on it from the other end hoping it wouldn't snap in the middle
