Took exam, girl sitting in front of me answered a whopping 3 out of 32 questions. Very white dude next to me took the exam for a very black lad

How do people risk taking an exam for others is so far beyond me, if the instructor wasn't lazy he'd be clapped immediately

usually because they know they're going to fail, and with online classes sometimes you can get away with it

I mean the person cheating for the guy. It's 0 tolerance at our uni. You get caught doing an exam for someone you get disciplinary action
Avatar
Doing so in France can lead to a 5 years ban from all exams, including school, university and also driving license
Avatar
Imagine fucking cheating at some exam and getting drive license taken

France damm

sounds unfair

Why? If you cheat on one exam it's a fair assumption that you might cheat on another given you seem to lack morals
Avatar
I think it's fine to disqualify you from the exam you took. I think each exam should try to make cheating impossible for themselves
Avatar
Hm, that way there is essentially no consequences to your action, you should be banned from atleast a couple sessions
Avatar
I guess from the same institution is fine, too. but at the first offense, a failed exam is enough IMO

I feel these chill punishments are why people are so lax about these things. I'm all for punishing people more harshly especially on these things

We spend months studying for these, that's what is more unfair imo
Avatar
I don't think the punishments work to prevent cheating that much, it seems to me that only a small fraction is ever caught
14:23
hence I think it should be structurally prevented, in a way that makes cheating impossible
Avatar
Why not both?
Avatar
because it seems to me that people seem to think that they help solve cheating by making harsher punishments
14:25
I don't want to ruin the lives of people getting caught cheating if too many people are cheating

I don't see why harsher punishments wouldn't work, it's a simple concept. If I slap your hand for cheating you'd risk it, if I cut off your hand for it you wouldn't.
Avatar
I heard that this in fact doesn't work for crimes
14:26
I can try searching for it
14:26
if that would be the case, would you be fine with less harsh punishments?

I think there is a fundamental difference here though, some crimes are motivated by the risk of starvation, that changes the risk/reward analysis. Some classes of crimes are commited by people that have mental issues, they might not be capable of a proper risk/reward analysis to begin with.
Avatar
ok, fair
14:30
but if it were ineffective outside of this thought experiment, would you agree that punishing cheaters less harshly makes sense for the other outlined reasons?
Avatar
I don't quite follow your other reasons, you think since a small minority ever gets caught a harsher penalty unfairly affects those?
Avatar
yes, I think that was the thing I tried to say above
Avatar
Say we manage to catch everyone with a 100% accuracy, would you still think a lesser penalty is better?
Avatar
then we don't need any penalty at all
14:35
(except for a failed exam)
14:35
the penalty exists because the detection methods are not completely accurate
Avatar
Hm, I guess that's fair in some sense, I guess I'm biased a bit due to the morality of the situation

this reminds me of america prison system
15:02
they like harsher prisons
15:03

thats true, the penalty acts as a deterrent

As I said, I feel differently about proper crime, I also support rehab and I think just limiting most criminals access to the society is punishment enough
