Avatar
otherwise it's useless

idk i was just trolling a little
08:14
(its related to the hn article i sent)
08:14

OH I've been waiting for this writeup for so long
08:17
These guys wouldn't tell me the attack. I spent 8 hours looking for it
08:17
Maybe another 6 hours trying to social engineer it out of them
Avatar
ouch
08:18
they tried dumping the switch secret keys
08:18
and accidentally leaked nvidia's?
08:18
that's fun
Avatar
Hey no spoilers
Avatar
the writeup is really short
Avatar
a little off topic but why are these writeups half the time black monospace over white background and left justified xd
Avatar
thats what github raw looks like
Avatar
this one is just a little text file
08:22
no html
Avatar
hexkyz' and SciresM's writeups are the ones that are more interesting to me
Avatar
They actually cracked it from what I gather. This guy seems to have cheated with voltage glitching :P
Avatar
it's amazing that people can break the system soo hard that they enable the little guy to run arbitrary code on their device
08:24
I wonder if video game consoles are just weaker than other stuff or if people are just more motivated to break it
08:24
(than, say, TV encryption dongles)
Avatar
Well TV encryption dongles are I think already mostly hacked and havent changed in a while
Avatar
oh, they're hacked? til
Avatar
I actually am not sure, but I saw a product in turkey a card that would let you watch satellite channels and not pay
08:27
I know atleast one person that uses it and he says it works just fine
Avatar
hm
08:28
it creates fuzzy feelings for me to know that people are able to break into the hardware they own
08:28
I'm fearing for a future where this is no longer the case because software/hardware is finally secure enough
08:28
but it seems we're not there yet πŸ™‚

Some papers I've read tell me secure enough really isn't feasible. These powerline attacks are just pure insanity
Avatar
that'd be a positive outlook
08:30
but that wouldn't help me hack my own console
08:31
if they can hack theirs
Avatar
Well not too long ago software hacking of consoles wasnt too popular either
08:32
I imagine if software security ever gets too good we'll just have to revert back to the times when you used to get your console chipped
08:40
interesting video linked in the hn discussion, will watch later
08:49
haha
08:49
this is amazing

satellite TV receivers had themAnd regularly get their card security schemes busted. The advantage that smartcards currently have is that not many people are looking into their security outside of pay-TV pirates. Phone users don't have a need to hack their own SIM cards, friends of OpenBTS simply use blank SIM cards, bank users don't need to ha...
