ESA, NASA and Arianespace have jointly defined 18 December 2021 as the target launch date for Ariane 5 flight VA256. This third Ariane 5 launch of 2021 will fly the James Webb Space Telescope to space from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana.

@TsFreddie 鍵 what does this look like on your screen? I have to zoom in to figure out what it is on mine 😛

gold + building = key

Hm, looks as small as mine on yours too
13:05
i can read it tho

I can barely make that out, maybe it’s time I get new glasses 😛
Avatar
8pt ~ 11pt are a nightmare for kanji
13:05
but i can still read it tho
13:06
this lol
Avatar
Very much readable
Avatar
but i can still read it somehow. even tho it is already a blob
Avatar
Idk i cant understand the biggest one monkalaugh

After like 10 strokes the strokes start coming together so close that it becomes pain to read

I’m guessing context helps a lot with that last one
13:08
well without context they can still figure it out on the second try
13:09
u
13:10
lol wtf is this
13:10
i didn't even realize it is all one color
Avatar
What is it in chinese btw? In japanese it’d be “quantity”
Avatar
same
13:10
or volume probably
13:10
but i guess still the same
Avatar
Eh, these characters very rarely translate well to english anyway, their meanings have a lot of nuance

@TsFreddie 鍵 what does this look like on your screen? I have to zoom in to figure out what it is on mine 😛
btw 键 in simplified chinese
13:11
the gold part is simplified

Eh, these characters very rarely translate well to english anyway, their meanings have a lot of nuance
e.g. 如 this would be “likeness” but it’d have nothing to do with physical likeness, atleast in japanese
Avatar
🤔 i think at this rate it might be possible for you to read chinese at some point
Avatar
Avatar
TsFreddie
the gold part is simplified
Hm, what is it simplified to there?
13:13
鍵 -> 键
Avatar
The gold part, what did they replace it with?
Avatar
still gold
Avatar
I don’t recognize that half, so I guess it didn’t make it to japanese
Avatar
gold as a radical just look like that now
13:14
hmm
13:14
Avatar
Ah a completely new radical?
Avatar
well simplified chinese is just redesign radicals
13:14
mostly
13:15
and of course some characters are completely redesigned
13:15
i have no idea why tho. i'm born with simplified chinese 🤔
13:16
a extreme case of (nonsensical) sentence would be 壹隻憂鬱臺灣烏龜尋釁幾羣骯髒變態囓齒鱷龞 一只忧郁台湾乌龟寻衅几群肮脏变态啮齿鳄龟 (edited)
Avatar
Well when the japanese simplified their glyphs they seem to have kept the shape but overloaded some older radicals instead
Avatar
ye, i think they mostly keep the old stuff.
Avatar
源 e.g. this one here, the 小 was supposed to be 水 iirc
13:18
13:18
that's probably just by design
13:18
i never thought it would be 水 tbh
13:19
since i don't think 原 has anything to do with water
Avatar
Well it’s fairly hard for me to look into the etymology of these since most if not all the resources for this kind of research are in chinese 😛
Avatar
also almost no one actually knows (edited)
13:21
so it doesn't really matter anyway kek
Avatar
As far as I’m aware the radical 原 originates from 泉+厂 a spring from the cliff-side
Avatar
hmm, i have no idea
13:22
i wonder if there is a "vocabulary" test for kanjis
Avatar
Probably
Avatar
also i'm guessing for a japanese person to know a kanji, they just have to pronounce it to know the meaning?
13:25
so pronouncing it is the hard part?
13:26
there are some chinese characters that i've been reading wrong or i just don't know how to read, but i know what they means. poggers
Avatar
Hm, I have no idea how an actual native reader reads. I usually go from the meaning to the reading, so if you ask me to list the readings of a single kanji I’d probably have a lot of trouble
13:29
and funny enough, for some of them, the mainstream IME will accept the wrong pronunciations. and if enough people read it wrong. our text book and dictionary will update them.
13:29
but i guess that's how language works anyway.
Avatar
鍵 e.g. I would first notice that this is “key” then I’d know that key is かぎ separately. Not sure if it’s the most efficient, but I can read a bit so it definitely works 😛 (edited)
Avatar
🤔 i guess only a native speaker know then
13:32
well they probably don't really "know" either.
Avatar
Now that I think about it this approach might not work that well in chinese since the hanzi aren’t isolated neatly like kanji in a japanese sentence
Avatar
i don't know
13:36
you'll just have to do it for every characters or some character pairs i guess
13:37
now that you mention it, it is probably pretty hard to tell which pairs are words which are dangling characters.
