e.g. 如 this would be “likeness” but it’d have nothing to do with physical likeness, atleast in japanese

i think at this rate it might be possible for you to read chinese at some point

Well when the japanese simplified their glyphs they seem to have kept the shape but overloaded some older radicals instead

Well it’s fairly hard for me to look into the etymology of these since most if not all the resources for this kind of research are in chinese

Hm, I have no idea how an actual native reader reads. I usually go from the meaning to the reading, so if you ask me to list the readings of a single kanji I’d probably have a lot of trouble

and funny enough, for some of them, the mainstream IME will accept the wrong pronunciations. and if enough people read it wrong. our text book and dictionary will update them.

Now that I think about it this approach might not work that well in chinese since the hanzi aren’t isolated neatly like kanji in a japanese sentence

now that you mention it, it is probably pretty hard to tell which pairs are words which are dangling characters.

I should have studied linguistics or sth. Don’t need multivariable calculus to do linguistics…
