Hello, I'm having problems with the game on Linux. Teeworlds runs fine, but at DDRaceNetwork I can't join any server because it doesn't download any maps. Also, when I close the game it says that it couldn't write my settings in the .cfg file. When I restart I have to set it up again. :c

@peixepalhaco has it worked before? and have you run DDNet with sudo at some point? (please don't try to run it with sudo)

No, it is my first time trying this game. I only knew it existed today after talking with some people in teeworlds. Just downloaded it through Steam and ran it.

@peixepalhaco your problem is odd, kinda sounds like a permission problem to me, since your DDNet seems to be unable to create files. maybe check the permissions on your .teeworlds directory and the donloadedmaps directory in it. I sadly don't have another idea, hopefully someone else has

Indeed it sounds like a permission problem. Here it is what the game's steam folder looks like:

Weirdly enough, I just tried running the game through Proton 5.13-6 and it worked without problem.

Both the native and the Steam version of TeeWorlds works fine here. It's just the DDRaceNetwork version from Steam that is having problems.

You mean Proton? I've tried to, and it is not working. I just tested it through Proton and it worked.

u might have to activate visibility of that directory

it might be because I've tried with Proton afterwards. didn't notice if those files were there before. (edited)

anyway, in your file browser find a "show hidden directories" thing

I'm aware of that

then maybe rename .teeworlds and try ddnet from ddnet.tw

No, I'm using the Steam version, but the native Linux version through Steam, not through Proton.

Proton is just used to play Windows-only games on Steam.

yea but u can force it

yes, but I didn't with teeworlds.

anyway, im not aware of steam just changing your path for native games

so either u somehow do you proton or teeworlds doesnt save its config

how do I run my steam version through terminal?

shutdown steam, open terminal and type steam

after starting the game look out for [storage] in the terminal

btw, how this fork managed to get more attention than traditional teeworlds? :0

this is only about race. there isn't even normal gameplay rooms inside ddnet client

you can still play teeworlds 0.6 with the ddnet client

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm talking about how this fork has gotten more attention than the base game. and how people play only ddraces more than the traditional gamemodes
19:20
a LOT more
Avatar
hm
19:21
I guess it has a couple of factors
19:22
I can think of two:
  • skill differences in the fighting gametypes are much worse, one tee will dominate another if one has substantially more skill
  • ddnet has a "progress" mechanic via the map finish points
Avatar
hm.. I see
19:27
but since it got more traction than the base game itself, and since both games are still compatible with one another... maybe it should add a special tab for the "classic" gamemodes. this way it would motivate DDRN-only players to try to play those modes too, since maybe a lot of them don't even know they exist to begin with. (I'm transferring this to #general)

i think most ppl just like the tw movement with a goal(finish line)
20:04
gores is basically just hook movement, modern ddrace is a mix of hammer hit/hammer fly and some shorter parts that are hard
20:04
look e.g. oldschool ddrace, its much more about parts
20:05
but its probs not fun to only have parts, bcs hh and hf are more random(in a way that its not so linear), and that creates more fun
Avatar
what are "parts"?

fng e.g. also has this movement aspect

vanilla is really just "own" movement but not so much about hooking others
