@manu try use ingame v-sync and then find the refresh rate settings which will be comfortable for your eyes. Another option could be limiting the framerate via system settings, lower it to 60hz for example.

they are under attack too

@Pathos we host one of the master servers, but it's also under attack. I could make it block all foreign ips and only let ddnet through, then it would work for our servers, but that's not nice to the other server hosters

If there's a ddos to other servers, maybe better go ddnet>custom servers strategy. Ddnet has more servers, isn't it?

u can find ddnet servers in the ddnet tab without a master server, unless u are using a bot client

@deen ddnet>teeworlds, so why not? Advantage matters? DDnetwork provide a possibility to play. Already an advantage. No ddnet means no teeworlds.
