i started with race. it makes you happy because shortruns are so easy, and you can chop second off of your time for hours even as a noob. then you start with middleruns which are as the name says not too long but also never too hard. eventually you can try your first longruns but thats where i changed to ddrace

you should start with vanilla

yeah even short race maps are a good choice

then switch to any other mod

and good place for noobs to start

shortraces have no killtiles so you can practice the controls while still acomplishing something

@Matodor this actually works the other way too, you can go through a one tile freeze up and land on the edge. The width of a tee is not exactly 1 tile, thats what makes it possible I guess. Still pretty nice haven't seen it myself yet ^-^

I made a map with this "trick" once but after going through the hole you land on a kill edge, and it actually works every time
