Before you had everything at a glance and could access a subsite in 2 steps. Now there is a new step which is "swipe and search". In my opinion a change like this should only be done when it makes things easier and don't add a further step. Yes the forum could be moved to front but that changes nothing on the fact that a different site is not directly accessable as it was before.

But it took so much space, was annoying to scroll past it all the time

what about a hamburger menu that's ordered like the desktop but only swipes in when needed, that would still be more intuitiv then this swipe and search menu (edited)

well hamburger menues are easy to pull off when you have a responsive framework behind the site, if not they are not really fun to make at all
